"Opertet Vivere"

"One must live"

(even if he has to steal for it.)

A few years back my daughter Kerry asked me a question that I couldn't answer.    "Dad who are my family ?"

Although I was born with the surname Todd I knew nothing about my family background, I was brought up by my grandparents William and Mary Bleakley and told stories all about the Bleakley's  and the Warburton's Family's.

My grandfather told me about his uncle who was hanged for the murder of his wife but never really knew the full story.. or the uncle,  he spoke of his father who was supposed to have drowned and of his younger brother Samuel who served in Africa and Italy with the famous Desert Rats during World War Two.

My grandmother told the stories about her grandmother who was born in India were her father was stationed whilst serving with the British Army, and she'd scare us with the ghost stories about pictures that would mysteriously fall of the wall as a warning that something bad was about to happen, and seeing ghostly figures as a child when she lived in the old tenements of Partick and Govan

On rare visits to my granny Todd's house I remember seeing picture's of the man in a soldiers uniform and the young schoolboy not knowing it was my grandfather Todd and his young son John who died as a child.

So thanks to friends Louise Ellis and fellow "chaser of 'a the deid people", Robert Hunt, who both had already started their family trees, they pointed me in the right direction and I began the task of finding out the answer to my daughters question.

Now after almost six years of searching through genealogy records in Glasgow, and Edinburgh, The National Archives of Scotland, the daily newspapers and poor law records of the last two hundred years in the Mitchell library, Knocking on strangers doors declaring "Hello I think were related" and spending endless hours on the computer where I  found many family members from Cardonald to Canada... here is the answer to my daughters question.......

" DAD , WHO ARE MY FAMILY ?
